Wika is a Vietnamese brand, and the Bao Fire Evolution 2 shows how far it has come in building its own technology. The central idea is a Wave-Foam core, an EPP structure that is shaped like a wave and takes its inspiration from the way a bow stores and releases energy. When you hit the ball, the wave-shaped foam compresses and then releases, producing attacks that are quick and a ball that dives with more weight.

The EPP itself is fifth-generation. The beads are smaller, finer and more durable, and the brand claims that elasticity has increased by more than 20% compared with earlier versions. The EPP also runs all the way through the body of the paddle into the throat, which strengthens the neck, improves durability and helps the swing speed.

The surface is Carbon XK100, a textured carbon face designed for grip and spin. Around the inner edge of the paddle is Shield-Foam Edge, which the brand says reduces vibration by up to 80%, though that is a manufacturer claim and results will vary. The outer edge uses a new EVA foam, adding further cushioning and protection.

The paddle is offered in 14mm and 16mm versions and in teal, orange and pink. Compared with the brand’s Quang Duong series, the Bao Fire 2 is among the lowest-priced Wika paddles, so it is an accessible entry to the brand’s technology.
